so Oppo what do you think is the safest?

proviso's

has to be road legal (no knight XV's or DARTZ vehicles etc..)

stock from factory

runs on reg gas or diesel

must able to drive all 4 seasons

offroad capable would be nice but isnt absolutely mandatory

this is not safe as is bullet proof though you can use that as well, im looking for more safe in the event of a accident or impact - not violence or attacks.

as for my vote ill take a old Volvo V70

My view is a bit skewed. A Mercedes-Benz E Class. Preferably a post 1990 W124 or W210.

Astro van, one of the lowest rates of deaths per amount of accidents among all average road going cars.

90% of my answers boil down to F-150.

Part nostalgia, part me being a truck kind of guy.

I would feel safer in a new car with a 5 star crash test rating than an old Volvo.

Volvo's have always been safe, but safety standards have improved since the V70 you pictured debuted.

Fairly, but still not that great compared to today's cars

See how the safety cage actually collapses? The roof and a pillar crumple.

It's not bad for 1998 standards, but I think that'd earn a poor rating today

My old truck was about as safe as it gets. 2005 GMC Yukon XL 2500, 8.1. (more torque for keeping the 30' trailer behind you where it belongs in a crisis). The stability control system is absolutely amazing. I sold it to my dad. I'm pretty sure that truck saved his life when he fell asleep at the wheel - while towing a 27' travel trailer. He nodded his head down, woke up to leaving the right side of the freeway and starting down the grassy embankment. He woke up pretty quick, turned left and knew enough to hit the gas instead of the brake. He told me that he felt the back end tighten up (active shocks), start to slide, then the Auto 4WD grabbed with the front axle and pulled it all back up onto the pavement.

Between it's mass, power and awesome road stabilizing abilities, I call it the safest thing you can drive!

All of the GM G-Body cars were pretty much rolling bank vaults. They were the strongest unibody cars ever made at the time, and during crush-to-failure testing the frames actually broke the machine. GM had to bring in the frame crusher used for their full sized trucks in order to find just how strong the cars were.
